Lenovo Magnificent Mile

ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), or Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a degenerative disease that targets the central nervous system. PLS (Primary Lateral Sclerosis) affects primarily upper motor neurons—those whose nerve cell bodies are in the brain and which deliver impulses to, and thus control, the activity of lower motor neurons. The latter innervate the muscles of the face, throat, larynx and limbs, the trunk and respiratory muscles. With ALS, there"s degeneration of both upper and lower motor neurons. As a small portion of the ALS family, PLS is not widely fuinded, and money for research relies heavily on fundraising, executed by nonprofit groups.

Sarah Roberts Witt, a one time avid runner and sufferer of PLS, launched the Magnificent Mile in 2006 to raide money for the research of PLS.The race on September 14th is the second of a nine-race series promoted by the Second Empire Restaurant in Raleigh. To learn more, to participate, and/or to donate, visit the websites below:

Magnificent Mile

Second Empire

NC Roadrunners

Tim Russert/NC Emergency Mgmt.

The shocking death of television political journalist Tim Russert has been felt by everyone this weekend. Russert's passion to his work, and devotion to his family, are unbridled and hard to match. On this Father's Day weekend, a weekend Tim Russert cannot share with his son, and his father, I spoke to my own father, John Zach, on this broadcast. My dad is a radio journalist in Buffalo, NY. Buffalo is my hometown, Russert's hometown, and my pop had a professional relationship with Tim Russert. On this Father's Day edition of Around the Triangle I talked to my dad about Tim Russert, and what he meant to the American viewer, the political scene, and to the journalists who knew him.

Duke Football's David Cutcliffe

Duke's Football program won six games in the past four seasons. In one of his last actions before leaving for the Athletic Director's position at LSU, Joe Alleva made a change at head coach for the Duke Blue Devils. David Cutcliffe has taken over, and he's brought a winning history to a program that is in desperate need of a turnaround. Cutcliffe has proven amazing with quarterbacks, having worked with both Peyton and Eli Manning, and Heath Shuler (US Congress). David Cutcliffe is candid and unscripted in this conversation on what it takes to be a coach, a teacher, and the new guy in town.

Triangle Biofuels

Vegetable oil. We use when we cook. We love when it's 375 degrees so we can fry our favorite junk food. Did you know that you can love it in your furnace and automobile fuel tank, too? Triangle Biofuels is one of a handful of local companies who are blending diesel with vegetable oil to create Biofuel. The mixture can be used in oil burning furnaces, and in the tank of a diesel motor. Biodiesel and Bioheat burn cleaner than traditional fuels, thus reducing the amount of emissions in to the atmosphere and environment. Triangle Biofuels CEO Zachary Hamm breaks down the process of making Biofuel, the environmental benefits, and a special incentive for restaurateurs.

Green Holidays

Thinking green is a new trend in popular culture. Environmentalists and conservationists hope it will be more than a fad. In November NBC launched a Green campaign that included The Today Show, Sunday Night Football, and several of NBC's popular programs injecting Green messages in to their story lines. Environmentalists Kelley Dennings (NC Division of Environment and Natural Resources) and Bianca Howard (City of Raleigh) discussed everything from trends in recycling and conserving, to Al Gore and An Inconvenient Truth. Kelley also brought in a number of items that were recycled in to new products (a circuit board book mark) and brand new products that were made from recycled materials (a t-shirt made from recycled plastic bottles!!!).

Social Security Administration

Pretending to be someone else in order to obtain goods and/or services is one of the oldest scam techniques known to man. The only criteria to change is the approach a crook uses to trick us out of our money, goods, information, et cetera. The advent of wireless internet connections have made Identity theft almost effortless for a savvy criminal, but some newer scam approaches take on the form of old fashioned methods: cold telephone calling, dressing up in official-looking attire, and most commonly sifting through trash containers for documents containing a persons personal information.

Social Security Administration Public Affairs Specialist Brian Simpson discusses scam techniques currently being implemented by dishonest individuals, including a handful of scams that involve impersonating someone claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. Simpson gives insight to how the public at large can protect themselves as best they can to prevent an identity crime from happening to them.
